Because of the way I have experienced trauma in my own life, my intention for this body of work was to represent trauma survivors, specifically in instances of sexual assault. This series is meant to capture the healing process as well as the lasting emotional effects experienced by a person dealing with this type of event.
These photographs incorporate clothing that is mostly perfect, apart from one instance of imperfection. This moment of deficiency is placed within the photograph as a metaphor for the emotional effects a trauma survivor experiences, even long after they have gone through trauma. It is intended to portray the healing a survivor encounters as well as the part within them that has not yet been able to heal. I used clothing that is mainly feminine to discuss objectification of women and how this can cause survivors of sexual assault to recall their trauma. Along with this, the strongly illuminated setting combined with achromatic locations is meant to represent the exposure, both physical and emotional, that a sexual trauma survivor witnesses during and after their experience.
